How to Make a Personal Connection with Customers
By Lambeth Hochwald

…There’s nothing more insulting than feeling that you’re being ignored in a conversation, says Matt Eventoff, owner of Princeton Public Speaking, an executive training company in Princeton, N.J. “Asking someone a question and truly listening to the response, rather than beginning to formulate a response while the other person is speaking, is so important.” In fact, small business owners may have a distinct advantage in connecting with customers because they are in touch with them so often. “The smaller the size of your business, the more encounters you’ll have and the more opportunities you’ll have to listen to your customers,” Eventoff says.

Meghan Casserly, Forbes Staff

….Constantly checking your smart phone conveys a real sense of arrogance, says Princeton, New Jersey-based communication coach Matt Eventoff.

Put the BlackBerry down,” says Eventoff, “especially if you’re in a meeting.” Turn it off, put it away, leave it in your office. “If you’re waiting for a particular, time-sensitive email, let your coworkers know beforehand,” Eventoff says, “Otherwise your BlackBerry has no place at the meeting.”

…“It’s very rarely that emails are being perceived as too meek,” says Eventoff. “As email has no tone, no emotions, no intonation, it’s very easy for your short emails to be perceived as pushy, demanding or impatient.”

HOW TO BREAK IT:

If poor email habits persist, bad feelings are bound to brew in a team, Eventoff says.

…“The confluence of events over the last week is amazing, unprecedented,” said Matt Eventoff, a communication and messaging strategist with Princeton Public Speaking. “With the situation in Egypt, you’ve got an unfolding drama that could change the world. And with the storm, you’ve got something that has broken up the daily routines of millions of people.

“And the fact is, there is almost no way to get a message through to someone when his or her daily routine has been disrupted. If I’m trying to figure out how to get to work or when the lights are going to come back on, I’m not interested in stories about what the hot T-shirt is at this year’s Super Bowl.”

By Brian Burnsed

…Beyond that, career experts note that while students might be able to learn well online, they’ll miss out on developing interpersonal skills that are critical to meshing in any professional setting. “In a work environment, face-to-face interaction and communication is crucial to success, and therefore the more experience interacting in professional situations face to face, the more experienced a person becomes,” says Matt Eventoff, a communication strategist with Princeton Public Speaking.
